Voyager Tarot as a Writer’s Tool
In honor of Halloween, I’m sharing– an excerpt from Now Write! Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror: the exercise portion from “Tarot for Writers” by James Wanless, PhD aka ‘Captain Pick-a-Card.’
Background
I met James at his monthly Voyager Tarot workshops at the Mystic Journey bookstore (when it was in Venice, California.) I got so much from these workshops, I attended faithfully for the entire year that he offered them.
In his wise and playfully engaging style, James taught us many approaches for using his deck. Not only did I gain a deep understanding of the tarot, both past and present, his practices led to many personal breakthroughs for myself and the other participants.
I saw how much value the tarot could have for writers, especially his Voyager deck with its modern, personal development approach, and potent collage imagery designed to spark intuition.
So I knew I wanted James to contribute to Now Write! Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror, He was kind enough to agree, and to allow me to publish the exercise portion as a post on the site: KEEP READING for Voyager Tarot writing exercises.

The ”What” and the “Why” of Books Uplift
What is Books Uplift? To be succinct, and a little sassy, it’s exactly what’s written on the website: “A place to share, learn, promote, and celebrate how books uplift us each and every day.”
Perhaps a bit trite but, trust me, this is a serious endeavor; a passion project dedicated to encouraging positive promotion and celebration of everything related to books. And much more.
I’m continuously asked why I started Books Uplift. After all, I’m not profiting from this venture, and it requires plenty of time. I invest numerous hours each week writing blogs, reading, and reviewing books, interviewing guests for spotlights, and creating positive, upbeat, and hopefully educational articles. Not to mention the research, planning, organization, and soliciting of expert insights to keep Books Uplift fresh. I’m thrilled when asked “Why?” because it has grabbed someone’s attention. Thankfully, this is a frequent occurrence.
To drill down further, here are a few reasons I decided to make Books Uplift a positive, not-for-profit community. KEEP READING
